• The Great Shake Out drill is tomorrow. In MOST situations, you will reduce your chance of injury:  Ground shaking during an earthquake is seldom the cause of injury. Most earthquake-related injuries and deaths are caused by collapsing walls and roofs, flying glass and falling objects. It is extremely important for a person to move as little as possible to reach the place of safety he or she has identified because most injuries occur when people try to move more than a short distance during the shaking.  Look around you now, before an earthquake. Identify safe places such as under a sturdy piece of furniture or against an interior wall in your home, office or school so that when the shaking starts you can respond quickly. An immediate response to move to the safe place can save lives. And that safe place should be within a few steps to avoid injury from flying debris.

•  The Great Shake Out drill is tomorrow. In MOST situations, you will reduce your chance of injury:  What NOT to do:
• DO NOT get in a doorway! An early earthquake photo is a collapsed adobe home with the door frame as the only standing part. From this came our belief that a doorway is the safest place to be during an earthquake. In modern houses and buildings, doorways are no safer, and they do not protect you from flying or falling objects. Get under a table instead!
• DO NOT run outside! Trying to run in an earthquake is dangerous, as the ground is moving and you can easily fall or be injured by debris or glass. Running outside is especially dangerous, as glass, bricks, or other building components may be falling. You are much safer to stay inside and get under a table.
• There will be a SADD and Peer Helpers meeting today during 7th period in the commons to prepare for Red Ribbon Week.
• There will be a Junior High Girls Basketball pre season meeting this Friday at 12:40 in Mr. Tully's room.  All necessary paperwork and information will be handed out.

COVER your head and neck with one arm and hand.
• If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl underneath it for shelter
• If no shelter is nearby, crawl next to an interior wall (away from windows)
• Stay on your knees; bend over to protect vital organs

Banned Books week is designed to celebrate our freedom to read... well, whatever you want. The Goosebumps series was banned by parents who felt that the books were too graphic and scary for their children. Many parents wanted to protect their kids from the element of fear; however, some teachers felt that Goosebumps helped students manage the feeling of being afraid. As anyone who grew up with the Goosebumps series knows, the books were often more weird than scary. (Remember Chicken, Chicken?!?!)

When it comes to the banned books themselves, there are some notorious titles like the high school staple To Kill a Mockingbird, which was banned for its themes of rape, use of profanity, and racial slurs.
