·      Our school is participating in the Washington State Healthy Youth Survey during fall 2021. The survey will be given to students in Grades 6, 8, 10 and 12.  The Healthy Youth Survey includes questions related to health risks and protective factors and access to school-based services. Survey results are used by schools, communities and state agencies to plan programs to support our youth and reduce their risks. Participation in the survey is voluntary and the students' answers are anonymous. Most schools will administer the survey online. They have been instructed to disable any recording, keystroke tracking, and video capture of school-issued devices used to take the survey. We ask that you do the same to ensure anonymous and honest participation. A Parent and Student Notification Letter is available on the school website for more information about the Healthy Youth Survey.

·      The Girl Scout Troop will be running a food drive during the month of October.  Some items that are needed are:  Rice-a-Roni, Hamburger Helper, canned soup, pancake mix, canned milk (not condensed), canned meat/fish, and peanut butter.  There is a drop off box by the high school office.

·      Are you the next Miss America or Miss America's Outstanding Teen?  The journey starts with the Miss Grays Harbor Scholarship Program and young women from Pacific County are eligible to participate in the program!  The Miss Grays Harbor Scholarship Program is holding informational meetings for young women ages 13 to 26 who are interested in earning scholarships.  Informational meetings about the program and how to participate in the competition will be held on October 10th and October 24th at 10 a.m. at the Hoquiam Little Theater at Hoquiam High School.  Zoom attendance is available by request. For more information please see Mrs. Owen or email Liisa Mayberry at LMayberry@missgh.org

·      We are observing Banned Books Week this week. Banned Books week is designed to celebrate our freedom to read... well, whatever you want. The Goosebumps series was banned by parents who felt that the books were too graphic and scary for their children. Many parents wanted to protect their kids from the element of fear; however, some teachers felt that Goosebumps helped students manage the feeling of being afraid. As anyone who grew up with the Goosebumps series knows, the books were often more weird than scary. (Remember Chicken, Chicken?!?!)

·      On this day in history 1520:  Was the 1st public burning of books in Netherlands, in Louvain.

·      Quote for the week:  "Be yourself; everyone else in already taken."
